The East Suffolk village of Trimley St Mary, on the outskirts of Felixstowe, is a picturesque spot which is home to a small and close-knit community. At the heart of the village lies Stennetts Park, comprised of a football field and a well-used play area full of long-serving Sutcliffe Play equipment. By early 2025, however, the Parish Council were keen to enhance this space with a host of exciting new additions, and we were delighted to take on the project.
Planning For Play
Our first task was to use the information gained from our site survey to create an exciting new design which would realise the council’s ambitious vision. The main parameters of our brief were twofold: firstly, to deliver new and challenging play experiences for junior-aged children (contrasting with the existing toddler-focused items), and secondly, to greatly expand the site’s inclusivity for children of every ability level – including those with physical disabilities and special educational needs.
This inclusive focus was a natural next step, as the site is situated close to a popular community centre which offers work and leisure opportunities for adults living with learning difficulties. Our upgrade to the playground would perfectly complement this, and further broaden the appeal of the park to the entire community.

Our design would also transform Stennetts Park in other ways. Much of the existing Sutcliffe Play equipment, which still offered many years of future usage, was to be relocated to different areas of the site, making way for our new additions and ensuring proper flow and circulation throughout. We also planned to increase the area of the existing bonded rubber mulch surfacing to encompass our new equipment, ensuring consistency throughout the space and boosting accessibility, particularly for visitors with wheelchairs or buggies/pushchairs.
Fun For All
Today, this play area has been thoroughly refreshed and re-energised, with its play offering massively enhanced by a wide array of new equipment:
The main attraction is a brand-new unit, the first of its kind to be installed anywhere in the country: Helix is a dynamic two-tower multiplay, the largest and most ambitious entry in our new Pentagon range, which offers engaging play opportunities for 29 users of junior age (meeting one of the key elements of our brief). The two towers stand at 1.6m and 3.9m high, while a connecting ‘V’ Bridge facilitates travel between them. Meanwhile, a series of ropes and climbing walls afford entry to the unit, and two curved, trough shaped slides deliver an exhilarating ride back to ground level. Finally, seating beneath the smaller tower offers young adventurers a welcome opportunity to rest and interact.

Surrounding this unit are a number of inclusive additions, including our Bugs Life Group Inclusive Seesaw, which inspires colourful balancing fun for all and features a cutaway panel on one end, enabling easy side transfer for less mobile children. Furthermore, we’re proud to see that the unit’s large central platform has often been used by older children (particularly girls) as a safe congregating point in our previous installations, and it is sure to fulfil the same function here, broadening the space’s gender inclusivity.
Nearby, two units encourage meaningful interactions between visitors of every ability level. Our Communications Panel displays a grid of relevant symbols that enable children – particularly non-verbal users – to communicate with their peers or parents/carers in a fun and engaging way. These tried and tested symbols are aligned with PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), a respected framework which is used nationally by the NHS. The panel is complemented by two of our multi-sensory Talk Tubes, allowing users to verbally converse from either end of the playground – an activity which is sure to fascinate young children. As well as inspiring less confident or SEN children to develop their communication skills at their own pace, each of these HPL-panelled tubes is also accessible from ground level, offering physical accessibility for all.
Completing the new range of equipment is our colourful Fergus 4 x 4 themed unit, which takes the form of a large off-road vehicle, and is constructed primarily from colourful HPL panels. The perfect accompaniment to the existing toddler-focused items, up to 4 children aged 2 – 10 can enjoy Fergus’s numerous play features, including seating for 2 children in the back and a driver in the front, as well as a dashboard with steering wheel, speedometer, oil/temperature levels, and pressable buttons. The front of the unit also includes routed vehicle detailing and facial features, presenting a fun and friendly face for younger children.

Alongside these new additions, we also upgraded some existing items, ensuring visitors to Stennetts Park enjoy a seamless play experience regardless of the age of the equipment. We replaced the surface decks on the existing Wheelchair Inclusive Roundabout (which had become worn due to heavy usage), returning this popular spinner to a good as new state, and we also removed an old swing seat on an existing frame, adding in its place one of our popular double-user Duo Pod seats.
Exceeding Expectations
David Southgate, Parish Clerk for Trimley St Mary Parish Council, said:
‘Trimley Parish Council is extremely satisfied with the installation of new play equipment at Stennetts Park. This compliments the original installation in 2018, and completes an attractive, adventurous playground for children.
The British-manufactured equipment is robust and top quality, and we would have no hesitation in extending the relationship we’ve developed with Sutcliffe Play. All personnel, from the Sales team to Contract Management, complemented one another and delivered great customer satisfaction.’
This exciting project saw us returning to an already popular Sutcliffe Play space and developing it even further with a thrilling infusion of new elements. We’re particularly proud that alongside the many inclusive additions for children with disabilities, this play area is now home to a dynamic, first-of-its-kind centrepiece unit, which is sure to attract many junior-age children to the park and massively enhance its overall appeal. We look forward to seeing the community benefitting from our work here for many years to come.
